As for the sun of today, it has an average distance of about 93,000,000 miles relative to planet Earth, yet heatwaves that we experience from time to time can be quite unbearable, whilst other hot climates of the world are almost uninhabitable. With that in mind, reflect over the following words of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, when he said:
‘’The sun will be brought close to mankind on the Day of Resurrection until its distance from them will be one mile. Then the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said ‘Because of this, people will become submerged in sweat, the severity of which will depend on their deeds; some will be submerged up to their ankles, others up to their knees, others up to their waists, whilst others will be submerged to their jaws.’ The Prophet ﷺ then pointed to his mouth.’’

Amidst these harrowing scenes of agony and unprecedented levels of heat, discomfort and stress, a select group of blessed Muslims are escorted to enjoy a shade that Allāh ﷻ has provided for them on this long day.
You’re probably thinking, such are the Prophets and Messengers. Yes, but Alhamdulillah, it is not exclusive to them. There are seven types of people whom Allāh ﷻ will give protection with His Shade on a Day when there will be no shade except His Shade. The second of the seven categories of believers is a young person who grew up in the worship of Allāh ﷻ:
‘’A man who had used up all of his youth and activism in the worship of Allāh.’’ Source: Narrated by Sa’eed Ibn Mansoor in his ‘Sunan’
The Prophet ﷺ singles out the ‘’young person’’ in mention as opposed to a child or elder, as the age of adolescence is a time when passion, desires, and urges are at their peak. The gravitational pull towards sin reaches an all-time high but, if despite the power of such a force, such a youth manages to keep himself within the limits of Allāh ﷻ, then that individual is a person of Taqwā. When Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Ubay Ibn Ka’ab (may Allah be pleased with him) about Taqwa.
Ubay said “Have you ever taken a thorny path?” Umar replied, “Yes I have.” Ubay then asked, “So how did you travel along this thorny path?” Umar replied, “I rolled up my garment and was cautious as to where I would tread to avoid being pricked by the thorns.” So Ubay responded and said, “This is Taqwa.”
This example explains the meaning of Taqwa. It illustrates how a person of Taqwa is cautious and careful with where they tread, not out of fear of stepping on a thorn, but out of fear of stepping into what Allah SWT has prohibited. They are aware of Allah SWT with every action and step they take. Imagine the heart of a young believer as fertile soil, ready to embrace the seeds of worship that will one day grow into the towering trees of faith. Starting the journey of devotion from a tender age is akin to laying a solid foundation for a life deeply rooted in the remembrance of Allāh ﷻ. Just as the roots of a tree anchor it against the storms, the worship of a young believer fortifies them to withstand the challenges of life.
In a world that often values material gains above all else, the young believer who chooses to prioritize worship over fleeting pleasures, shines as a source of wisdom and discernment. By dedicating time and effort to acts of worship, they are constructing an everlasting reservoir of blessings that will accompany them not only in this life but also in the Hereafter. Dear reader, the words of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ illuminate the remarkable journey of a young person who grows up in the worship of Allāh ﷻ. This journey extends beyond the mosque or the prayer mat; it permeates every facet of life, nurturing character, resilience, and an unbreakable bond with our Creator.
So how can we as young believers attain this lofty reward and remain steadfast?
Let’s dive into a 5-step plan to practically transform ourselves into young Muslims worthy of Allāh’s Shade:
1. Strengthen Your Knowledge and Understanding:
- Begin by gaining a deeper understanding of Islam. Read the Quran with translation and study its tafsir (exegesis) to grasp its meanings.
- Invest time in studying the Hadith to learn the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
- Seek knowledge from reputable scholars or institutions to gain a solid foundation in Islamic theology and jurisprudence.
- Studying Allāh's names and attributes is a virtuous pursuit that enriches your faith, strengthens your worship, and guides your behaviour. It fosters gratitude and provides solace in challenging times.
- Read the Seerah (biography) of The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He is the embodiment of the highest moral and ethical standards. Reading about his character and conduct will inspire us to emulate his excellent qualities, such as honesty, kindness, patience, and forgiveness.
- Learning the meaning of the Salah will increase the khushoo (serenity and humility) you experience. When you know what you're saying to Allāh, you become more conscious of your dependence on Allāh and your role as His slave.
- Learn the Arabic language because the miracle that is The Quran is best appreciated and accessed in the language in which it was revealed.
2. Consistent Acts of Worship:
- Establish a consistent prayer routine. Perform your daily Salah (prayers) on time and with devotion, making it a non-negotiable part of your daily schedule.
- Dedicate time for recitation and reflection upon the Quran, striving to understand its guidance and apply it to your life.
- Engage in additional acts of worship, such as voluntary prayers (Sunnah), supplication (dua), and dhikr (remembrance of Allāh).
- Dua is the weapon of a believer. Here are two powerful duas from the Quran and authentic sunnah:
Anas reported: The Messenger of Allah, (saw) would often say, “O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion!”
"Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower."
3. Surround Yourself with a Supportive Community:
- Connect with like-minded peers and join Islamic youth groups or organizations that promote faith- based activities and discussions.
- Attend regular gatherings at your local mosque or Islamic centre to build a strong support network and seek advice from knowledgeable individuals.
- Foster relationships with friends and mentors who inspire and encourage your faith journey.
4. Self-Reflection and Accountability:
- Engage in self-reflection to assess your actions, intentions, and areas for improvement. Keep a journal to track your spiritual progress.
- Hold yourself accountable for your actions and seek sincere repentance when you make mistakes. Allah ﷻ is oft forgiving and merciful.
- Set personal goals for spiritual growth, and periodically evaluate your progress in achieving them.
5. Embrace Challenges with Patience and Perseverance:
- Understand that maintaining steadfastness may come with challenges. Face these challenges with patience (sabr) and perseverance, knowing that Allāh's help is near.
- Seek inspiration from the stories of the Prophets and their steadfastness in the face of adversity.
- Engage in community service and acts of kindness to strengthen your character and resilience.
Remember that steadfastness (istiqamah) is a continuous journey that requires effort and dedication. It's normal to face moments of doubt or distraction, but by consistently following this plan and seeking Allah's guidance, you can develop a strong and unwavering faith that will carry you through the ups and downs of life.
As the young generation, let us embrace this path of worship with sincerity and enthusiasm. Let us strive to be among those whom Allāh ﷻ shades with His divine protection on the Day of Judgment. By growing in faith, devotion, and good character, we become beacons of light and guidance for the world around us.
May Allāh ﷻ bless our efforts, strengthen our resolve, and envelop us in His shade, both in this world and the Hereafter.
